His early childhood was spent in Windsor, Missouri and Marshall, Missouri;
they then moved to Cross Timbers, Missouri.
On April 30th, 1950, Donald was united in marriage with RoseAnn Tull. Together, Donald and RoseAnn were blessed with two children, Stan and Abbe.
Donald attended Southwest Missouri State University, and went on to receive his Master's degree in education from Central Missouri State University.
Donald began his teaching career at Owsley, a small country school near Cross Timbers, Missouri. He taught both 7th and 8th grades, and coached high school basketball in Preston, Missouri. He then moved to the Osceola school district, where he was the high school principal and basketball coach. In 1966, Donald became the superintendent of Raymore-Peculiar High School, where he remained for 18 years, until his retirement.
Donald is the only person to have one of the district schools named in his honor. In August of 2017, Donald attended the ceremony where Shull Elementary School was rededicated as the "Shull Early Learning Center".
Donald served as a member of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Board of Control, and served a term as president.
