Steve was born in 1952 in the Bronx, New York and grew up in New Jersey, the son of Stephen and Ellen (Wootton) Moroney. He developed his extraordinary work ethic at age 12, delivering groceries to help support his mother and younger siblings after his father's death. Enlisting in the Marine Corps at age 18, he rose in rank from Private to Gunnery Sergeant in eight years. A highlight of his career was serving as the drill master of Parris Island. He earned his bachelor's degree while in the military and retired from the Marine Corps as a Chief Warrant Officer 5 in 2000.
He was the director of the Marine Corps' Manpower Information Systems Support Activity in Kansas City, Missouri until he was diagnosed with cancer in June.
He enjoyed running and completed the Marine Corps marathon twice. He had the opportunity to live in many parts of America and overseas; and to travel all over the world. He loved his family, friends, dogs, the Green Bay Packers, and frequent trips to Hawaii.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Martin Moroney.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barb; their son Matt; his sons Stephen (Christina) and Brian; five grandchildren; sisters Johanna O'Neill and Angie (Paul) Cymbaluk; two nephews; and two pups he brought home from shelters.
