S.L. "Brad" Bradley, a long time resident of Belton, passed away suddenly on March 3, 2010, after collapsing in his home. Brad was the only child of W.H.L. Bradley and Mabel Marceline Bradley, born on August 2, 1933. He graduated from William Christman High School in 1951 and attended William Jewell College briefly before a 2 year stint in the Navy.
Brad was a self-employed, self-made man. He developed, built and managed two mobile home parks in Belton. After selling these thriving businesses, Brad developed a large residential area on Belton's east side, and also served as a term as Alderman in the little town that he loved. Brad then exchanged his blue collar for a white one, entering the brokerage business in 1973, passing all the required brokerage exams, though he had no college degree. He worked successfully for brokerage firms in downtown Kansas City until, 1986 when he again changed career and served as operations manager at a beef processing facility in western Kansas. Brad finally retired from his diverse careers in 1990. He could build or fix anything, enjoyed restoring antique cars, and tinkering with diesel engines, from Mercedes to Caterpillar.
Brad married his loving wife, Alice Joyce Briggs on July 5, 1952. Joyce survives her husband of 57 years, along with their 4 children and their spouses; Lynda J. Gough and Perry of Belton, Douglas L. Bradley, MD and Charlotte of Belton, Gary K. Bradley and Mary of Leawood, and Sandra G. Mickelson and Marvin of Dallas; grandchildren; Christopher Gough, Matthew Bradley, Sarah Bradley, Nicholas Lueck, Casey Lueck, Nicole Walton, Megan Moreno, Coryn and Aaron Mickelson ; five great grandchildren, Aiden, Brayden, Ava and Brad Walton...and one on the way! A man could not ask for a better friend than his buddy, Bill Jowett. Brad is preceded in death by his parents.
Brad had a nickname for anyone who mattered to him, his sign of affection. He loved to travel with Joyce, going to flea markets and collecting. He particularly enjoyed his visits with Joyce's 4 sisters and their spouses, especially their trips to Branson to take in a few shows. His guidance, wisdom and wit will painfully be missed by all whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests a donation be made in to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation 8900 State Line Rd. Suite 320, Leawood, KS 66206.
The family would like to thank the Belton Fire Department and the Emergency Department staff at Research Belton Hospital for their heroic efforts.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 10-11AM, at Cullen Funeral Home, 612 Foxwood Drive, Raymore, Mo, with services to follow at 11AM. Burial will be at Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City, Mo.
