Obituary

Our sweetheart, Philip McCollough Barnett, passed on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2025 at home.

Phil was born March 29, 1938, in Oklahoma City, OK to Martha Janet Woods.  He spent his youth in Grain Valley, MO and in high school participated in theatre, football, basketball and track. He graduated in 1956 and joined the U.S. Navy - serving until his honorable discharge in July 1960.   He was employed by Remington Arms and Olin Corporation at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant and retired after 30 years.  He began his career working in the warehouse and finished as a General Foreman.  While working full-time, he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri in 1976.

He married Rebecca (Becky) in 1965 and they lived in Independence.  During their 60 years together they moved to Blue Springs, Lake Winnebago, Lee's Summit and Raymore.  They also enjoyed their home away from home at Byron, then Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.  While living at Lake Winnebago, Phil served on the HOA Board from 1981-1983, then the Board of Alderman from 1984-1986, followed by two terms as Mayor until 1989.

Phil loved sports and was a Chiefs and Mizzou football season ticket holder for many years, even the bad seasons. He refereed basketball while living in Blue Springs. He participated in many seasons of bowling, softball, trap shooting and golf clubs with his co-workers. He loved snow skiing and waterskiing.  Phil and Becky traveled extensively during retirement, completing their visit to all 50 states, as well as Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and many Caribbean islands.  Phil was an avid reader, and was well known at the Oldham Parkway Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL), often being the first to borrow a book after its release.

He loved his family. He was a great listener, mediator, mentor and supporter. He adored his granddaughters and was absolutely enthralled by his great-grandchild.

He is survived by his wife Rebecca, his daughter Stephanie (Craig) Harris, granddaughters Allyn (Josh) Eberrneste and Loren McEntire, his great-grandchild Aspen Eberrneste and his sister, Sharon Payne, as well as several nephews, nieces, and many extended family members  and friends.
