NANCI SUE (COX) SMITH
Nanci Sue (Cox) Smith of Silver Lake in Raymore died at Saint Joseph Medical Center on July 8, 2013. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Thursday, July 11, 2013 at St. Sabina Catholic Church, 700 Trevis Belton, MO with visitation 10-11 AM. The Holy Rosary will be at 9:30 AM at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. She was born in Annapolis, Maryland, to James E. and Willow Mae (Starkey) Cox on December 23, 1943. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association 6701 W 64th St # 110, Shawnee Mission, KS 66202. Nanci spent her childhood in various cities in Maryland, Virginia, and Ohio, moving frequently with her family as her father's electrical troubleshooter job demanded. She moved to Kansas City in 1961 after graduation from high school in Cambridge, Ohio.
Nanci was married to Stanley Joseph Smith in August 1964. Nanci and Stan lived in Raytown for 35 years and attended Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Nanci served in many volunteer capacities for the Lourdes Parish Council, the PTA, the Booster Club, and was a member of the Lourdes School Board. Nanci was also a Cub Scout leader for two years and a Girl Scout leader for 10 years. In 1984, Bishop John J. Sullivan presented Nanci with the St. Anne Award, a national award given to youth group leaders who demonstrate a consistent commitment to the formation and development of Catholic girls in Girl Scout or Campfire troops. Nanci also worked with the Athletic Club and the PTA at O'Hara High School. In 2001 Nanci and Stan moved to Raymore.
Nanci began working for the Internal Revenue Service in 1981. When she retired in 2004, she was a section chief supervising computer system administrators.
Nanci was a member of St. Sabina Church in Belton, the Margaret McNair chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sassy Lassie chapter of the Red Hat Society, several IRS retiree luncheon groups, and the National Association of Retired and Active Federal Employees. Nanci's favorite activity was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed antique shopping, helping out with church activities, and the numerous cruises she and Stan took to the Caribbean and Mexican Riviera.
Nanci was preceded in death by her mother and father, James Edward Cox and Willow Mae Cox, of Anderson, IN, and a sister, Sharon Lee Cox. Nanci is survived by her best friend and loving husband of forty-nine years, Stanley Smith of the home, and their children: daughter Laura Ann (Smith) Jambrosic and husband Todd G. Jambrosic of Raymore; son Christopher Stanley James Smith and wife Joi L. Smith of Shawnee, KS. Nanci had four grandsons, a great-grandson, and two great-granddaughters, all of whom she loved dearly: Nicholas Gregory Jambrosic with wife Nicole, son Landon and daughters Caleigh and Gabriella; Taylor Joseph Jambrosic; Ryan Christian Smith; and Dylan Christopher Smith. She also leaves a sister, Janice Faye Cox and friend Sharon Wright, brother James Allan Cox with wife Renee, all of Anderson, IN. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews from both the Cox and Smith sides of the family.
