MICHAEL LEE WILLIS

Michael Lee Willis, age 62, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on July 23, 2025.

Private family services at this time.

Michael was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on October 29, 1962, the son of Huey Lee Willis and Opal Joan Tennel.  After graduation from Raymore-Peculiar High School, Michael served his country in the United States Air Force for six years achieving the rank of Sergeant. Shortly after that he made his career as a Postal Clerk Expediter in the United States Postal Service for over thirty years, retiring in 2024.

Michael acquired his first (of four) golden retrievers in 1992.  This led Mike to become immersed in the world of dog sports including obedience, rally, tracking and agility.  He was a member of Agility Ability of Greater KC, serving as its president for several years.  He was also a member of Greater KC Dog Training Club, KC Golden Retriever Club and Sunflower Kennel Club.  He helped the clubs in many ways – hauling agility equipment and setting courses, laying track in all kinds of weather and ring stewarding.

Mike became an agility judge for ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) and CPE (Canine Performance Events) His judging assignments took him to all parts of the country.  He also taught some agility classes.  He and his dogs qualified and attended national agility events in AKC (American Kennel Club) and NADAC (North America Dog Agility Council).  They made it to the final rounds on more than one occasion.

Mike spent many years doing therapy work with Pets for Life.  He was truly pleased when he saw people respond to his dog after being told that they were generally unresponsive.

Mike's golden retrievers were Dragon, Prometheus, Perseus and Pandora.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Opal Joan (Tennel), and his brother, Keith Wayne Willis.

He is survived by his parents, Huey and Mary Willis, two sisters, Linda Moore, and Kathy Willis (Kevin Barnes); two brothers, Chris Willis (Audrey) and William Willis.
