She grew up in the house built by her great grandfather who received his land as payment for his Civil War service as a Union officer. She graduated valedictorian of her Keytesville class. In 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, Udell Rutledge. They moved to Wichita, KS where she completed a secretarial course that would serve her the rest of her life. Merna had a fulfilling career as an executive secretary for many prominent companies. While employed with Payne & Jones law firm she came into the career opportunity of her lifetime. In 1977 James K. She was very proud to serve her nation in this capacity for 21 years, retiring from the Judicial Branch of the Federal government in July 1998. Merna was beautiful, intelligent, and compassionate. She had a wonderful laugh and sense of humor; spending time with her in person or by phone was an uplifting experience. The void her departure leaves in the lives of those who love her will be lasting.
