MELVIN K. JOHNSON
Melvin K. Johnson, age 95, of Belton, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 in Belton, Missouri surrounded by his loving family.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2019 at Cullen Funeral Home 612 W. Foxwood Dr. Raymore, Missouri 64083.
Mel was born on February 25, 1924 in Falls City, Nebraska. He was one of seven children, all brothers. He retired from Bendix, now known as Honeywell, in Kansas City after thirty-five years of service.
After graduating from high school, Mel immediately joined the United States Navy on March 10, 1943 to serve his country during World War II, was stationed in the Pacific, primarily in the Philippines with the honorable rank of Aviation Ordnance Man Third Class. He met his wife, Louise, in Ottumwa, Iowa while stationed at the naval air station there. She was the love of his life and were happily married for 69 years until her death in October 2013.
Mel had many hobbies and interests including golf, fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks where he built a cabin the family enjoyed for many years. He learned and used Morse Code and corresponded with people all over the globe on his ham radio. He loved electronics and owned many computers and his favorite mode of communication was his iPad. He followed his Grandchildren on Facebook and that brought so much pleasure to his later years. He loved old movies and 1940's music listening to it extensively on his Sirius radio.
Mel is survived by one brother, Virgil Johnson, Falls City, Nebraska. His Children Jim (Charlotte) Johnson, Jean (Steve) Ohler, and Melva (Paul) Surls. Grandchildren Christina Geiger, John Surls, Jamie Johnson, Amy Spears, and Adam Ohler. Three Great Grandchildren Kaleb Surls, Henry and Lucy Spears.
Preceded in death were five brothers, Bob, Gene, Bill, Marvin (twin brother) and Kenneth; and grandson, Timothy Johnson.
