LAWRENCE STEINKE
Lawrence "Larry" Steinke accomplished his ultimate goal of this earthly life to be with our Lord and Savior when he was carried Home on July 27, 2023. Larry passed away peacefully in his home of 51 years under hospice care. He has willed his body to KU Medical Center for student medical education. His memorial service will be Thursday, August 10 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Raymore, MO at 11am with visitation from 10-11am.
Larry was born on March 27, 1936 in Williamsburg, IA to Rudolph "Rudy" and Leona Steinke. He married the love of his life, Betty Rhea Estep, on June 7, 1959. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers (Roger, Ronald and Leon). He is survived by his wife; his children Diane Pribac (Jan), Durham, NC; Dwain Steinke, Peculiar, MO; Tina Atkins (Harry), Pleasant Hill, MO; grandchildren Meagan Freund (Dustin), Madlyn Dixon (Ryan), Ryan Steinke-Chong; Blake Atkins; great-grandchildren Avery, Kilynn, Phoenix and Raven.
Shortly after graduating from Shawnee Mission High School, Larry served his country in the Army National Reserves and Officer Candidate School. He spent his career as a Cost Estimator for Black and Veatch retiring with 40 years of service. In 1972, Larry and Betty purchased 5 acres in Peculiar, MO where he built their dream home and raised his family.
Larry was best known for his generosity and strong work ethic. During the 1970's, he helped to bring little league sports to Peculiar and worked with others to develop the city ballpark. Each summer he planted a large garden and shared his harvest with many. He had a catfish pond that he, his family and friends enjoyed through the years. Larry was an active member of the church and built the 'old rugged cross' that hangs above the altar during Lent. He loved spending time with his grandkids, camping, canoeing, going to Chiefs games, listening to the Royals and any project that kept him busy.
In 2013, Larry suffered a debilitating stroke that left him paralyzed. While he made a valiant effort to regain his mobility, he was never able to walk again. During this time, he didn't complain and kept his sense of humor. Larry was able to live in their home for the remainder of his life with the help of his family and several loving caregivers.
