LAVON W. BAKER

Lavon Wanda Baker, 88, passed from this life on May 6, 2017 in Redondo Beach, CA, surrounded by loved ones.

On Christmas Day 1928 the second child of Owen A. Priester and Cleta Mae [Martin] Priester was born in Hartville, Missouri. When very young, the family migrated to Van Buren, in Carter County, MO. It was there that Lavon spent what she described as an idyllic childhood playing in the fields and the creek with her brother Emmett. There was hard work, but they were happy times .Those formative years defined her outlook on life. She was pragmatic, strong willed and highly principled.

Graduating from Van Buren High School's class of 1946, she soon moved to Kansas City to discover her life beyond the farm. There she rediscovered a young man who grew up close to her, and that she knew from school. They were joined in marriage on the 29th of October, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised their three children in Belton, MO where she lived for nearly 60 years.

She was primarily a homemaker devoting her life to her children, but over the years held positions at local businesses: Week's Jewelry and Jimco Test Equipment.

Lavon lived independently until recently and was most comfortable at home on Baldwin Street in Belton where she became the neighborhood Grandmother. A special thanks to Wilma Behning [Frank] and her family for all the support when she lived on her own, Lavon adopted them as family. Her love of home did not stop her from embracing travel, both in the US and abroad with family, including trips to the UK, Greece and Germany.

She lived her final two years comfortably with four generations of her family under one roof in Redondo Beach, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents Owen and Cleta Priester, her husband Norman Kingsley Baker, a daughter, Alice Lavon Baker, her brother Emmett Wallace Priester and his wife Thelma Lee Priester of Fresno, CA.

Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Jo Kartsonis [Paul], Redondo Beach, CA, and son, Norman Wayne Baker [Jessica], Raymore, MO.

She has three Grandchildren, David Michael Kartsonis [Mia] Torrance, CA, Rachael Marie Steven [Aaron] Torrance, CA, and John Wayne Baker, Raymore, MO.

Two great-grandchildren, Michael Evan Kartsonis, and Owen Jacob Steven, and a great-granddaughter - Emily Maria Kartsonis is anticipated to arrive in early July.

She will be laid to rest at the Belton Cemetery on May 15th, 2017 at 1pm. Graveside services only. The funeral will be followed by a reception for family and friends.
