John “Jack” Olsen passed away peacefully after a life defined by service, generosity, hard work, and unwavering devotion to family and community.
Born on July 22, 1938, Jack was the son of Eugene and Margaret Olsen, and the brother of Sally. Proud of his New York and New Jersey roots, he carried that heritage with him throughout his life.
Jack earned a bachelor's degree in Finance from Washington & Jefferson College and later completed a master's degree in Financial Analysis from Duquesne University. He built a successful career as a financial analyst, working for several banks and financial services institutions before retiring in 1994. Even in retirement, his love of finance never faded, and he remained an active participant in the financial markets.
Jack was married to Nancy Durr in 1960, and together they welcomed three children: Robby, Betsy, and Jeff. He later married Freida Cox in 1974. On January 1, 1985, at the stroke of midnight, Jack married the love of his life, Kaylee Beal. Through their marriage, Jack welcomed Kay’s children, Mark and Alicia, into his family.
Jack and Kay shared a remarkable partnership until Kay's passing in March 2025. Together they lived lives centered on compassion and service, opening their home to those in need. They fostered Nathan, Katina, and Jerry, later adopting Jerry as their son. Over the years, they also welcomed many young people seeking stability and support, including Dawn, Josh, and Billie. Their home became a place of hope, encouragement, and second chances.
In 1988, Jack and Kay purchased an 80-acre property they affectionately named Straightfellow Farm. There they raised mules, managed a small herd of cattle, and built a life they loved. Jack’s greatest sanctuary was the shop and garage he built on the property, where he restored antique automobiles, worked on tractors, organized projects, or simply relaxed while watching television. Anyone looking for Jack knew to check the shop first.
Jack was deeply committed to his community. He served as an Alderman for the City of Belton, was a founding member of the Belton Eleemosynary Society, taught finance at Avila College, and contributed his time and leadership to numerous community boards and organizations.
He found joy in many pursuits, including antique cars, managing the farm, and following the Brooklyn Nets. He was known for his sharp financial mind, his willingness to lend a helping hand, and his genuine concern for others. Whether repairing an old car, discussing the stock
market, or quietly helping someone through a difficult season, Jack lived with purpose and generosity.
Above all, Jack will be remembered for his kindness, his steadfast work ethic, his humor, and the countless lives he touched through simple acts of compassion. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the people he welcomed into his home, the community he served, and the many friends whose lives were made better by knowing him.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2026, at The Martin Event Space 13440 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64145. https://themartineventspace.com/
