JOHN C. GOODSON
John C. Goodson passed away on June 5, 2011. A funeral and celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Cullen Funeral Home, 612 West Foxwood Drive, in Raymore, MO. A visitation is to be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Cullen Funeral Home. Burial will be at Floral Hills Cemetery following the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House 12000 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, Missouri 64145.
Mr. Goodson was born in rural Henry County, May 2, 1915. He is the youngest of six children born to Blanche & Neal (Christopher Cornelius) Goodson. He was pre-deceased by his parents; his siblings: Maud, Claire, Clarence, Paul, and Harry; and his dear wife of 61 years, Marie. He is survived by his three children and their spouses; Judy and Tom Warburton of Chapel Hill, NC, Patricia and Earl Buckles of Memphis, TN, and Neal and Michelle Goodson of Blue Springs, MO; seven grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.
Throughout his life, Mr. Goodson worked to serve his God, his family, his country, and his fellow man.
He was a lifelong member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and was baptized in Knob Creek at Creighton, MO. During his life he belonged to the congregations of Creighton Christian Church, Ivanhoe Park Christian Church, Broadview Christian Church, of which he was a charter member, and most recently, Raymore Christian Church. His strong leadership qualities helped him to serve his local church in nearly every capacity, including Elder, for more than fifty years.
Mr. Goodson served the Kansas City area church for several years holding many offices, including president and treasurer. His specialties were finance and new churches, having worked directly on committees to establish four new churches. He also served on the national level for twelve years including working as a director and chairman of the Board of Church Extension.
He was proud to have served in the United States Army during World War II as a member of the Army Ground Forces stationed at Camp Wolters, TX, rising to the rank of
Staff Sergeant.
For a number of years he served on the Honorary Board of Governors at Baptist Hospital, where he was a lifetime member and past president. He served the Research Belton Hospital Foundation as a board member for twelve years, and was named Chairman Emeritus.
At Foxwood Springs Retirement Community, he served as a board member, treasurer, and co-chair of the fundraising campaigns for the Residential Care Center, and the Alzheimer's Unit. Each campaign raised over one million dollars.
Also while living at Foxwood, he enjoyed visiting with and helping other residents while working at Foxwood's Country Store. He retired from this volunteer job at age 94 after 27 years of service.
His tenure as a director of Community Bank of Raymore gave him further opportunities to share his financial expertise as well as keep up with people in the bank and community.
He was a past president of the Raytown Kiwanis Club, as well as a member of Kiwanis International.
His faith in God, his belief in the basic goodness of mankind, his creativity, his energy to work tirelessly on causes in which he believed have left a powerful legacy for his family and his many friends.
