JOAN MARSHALL HUNTER
Joan Marshall Hunter, age 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Foxwood Springs Living Center.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2019 at Foxwood Springs 1500 Foxwood Dr., Raymore, Missouri 64083 in the Bromwell Lounge. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held on a later date at Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas.
Joan was born on April 28, 1923 to Vera Manley and Hobart Marshall, and grew up in Grenola, Kansas. She graduated from the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas in 1944 and served in the Army Nurse Corps, spending a year and a half in Bayreuth, Germany immediately following World War II.
She earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Minnesota in 1950 and a master's degree in nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1965. In her 46 years of active nursing, she worked in Health Departments in Topeka, Kansas and Sapulpa, Oklahoma. She also worked in the Okla. Crippled Children's Commission and in Public Health Service Division of Indian Health in Okla. and Mississippi. She taught nursing at the University of Missouri for ten years, and at Pittsburg State University for 11 years before partially retiring in 1988.
She was an active member of the Pittsburg First Christian Church and various other organizations. In May 1997 she moved to Foxwood Springs Living Center in Raymore, Missouri and transferred membership to Raymore Christian Church. In 1999 she married Joseph Leslie Hunter who preceded her in death on December 2007. When Joan and Les married, he had three daughters, Diane Castle, Susan Gerhardt, and Jacque Hobble. They and their families became her extended family.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband of eight years, Joseph Leslie Hunter; parents, Hobart and Vera Marshall; sister, Madge Strickler; and brother in law, Ivan Strickler.
She is survived by her three nephews, Steve Strickler, Tom Strickler and Douglas Strickler; their families; eight grand nephews and nieces; and nine great grand nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Raymore Christian Church, 500 Peace Dr., Raymore, Missouri 64083 or the Foxwood Springs Fellow Ship of John c/o the Residents' Council 1500 Foxwood Dr., Raymore, Missouri 64083.
