HOWARD J. GATTON
Our beloved Howard J. Gatton, 81, peacefully passed March 7, 2014 while surrounded by his family at Menorah Medical Center. Dad, Grandpa, Poppi; a man of many names, but if you were to ask him it was always "Howard the Great". His younger years are remembered for the devotion that he gave working and helping take care of his ten brothers and sisters who he loved dearly. He graduated from Leon High School in Leon, Iowa in 1951 and later joined the Air Force where he graduated from Air Force Radio Communications School and was deployed during the Korean Conflict. After returning home he fell in love with his wife Jackie whom he married on November 30, 1957, and shortly after started his long service to his favorite rail road, the Rock Island. This, you could say is what gave him his million dollar smile. After spending many years in the Quad Cities, Illinois area and bringing life to his five daughters (Dr.Teresa Gatton-Schick (Brent), Linda Meier (Kyle), Joyce Short (Joe), June Babb (Robert), Charlotte Long (Coby)) who inspired him to become a great man. He moved for a new life in Lenexa, Kansas as a devoted member of the Church of Christ. He was a man of many words, but with those words came great wisdom. Howard was the most honorable and loyal friend you could ever have. In his later years he became a mentor and confidant to not only his daughters, but his many grandchildren. Grandpa was always one you could count on to be on time and full of life. His sense of humor and ability to always say the right thing at the right time makes him irreplaceable. Even though we have lost his body we will never lose his spirit. His spirit and love is something that he has placed in all of us. The honor and pride which "Howard the Great" lived with, not only made him a great American, but a great man as well.
