Helen was born July 20, 1922 in Kismet, Kansas, the daughter of Gustaf and Gertrude Andrews Bayha. Helen spent her entire young life in Kismet, graduating from high school there in 1940. Helen met her husband, Nick, while he was stationed at Liberal Army Air Field, in Liberal, KS. They were married in Fowler, KS in 1943. After Nick graduated from KSU in 1949, and returned from duty with the U. S. Army in the Korean War, Helen and her family moved to the greater Fremont, Ohio, area and raised their children in Lindsey, OH. In those early years Helen volunteered as a 4-H leader helping young women learn sewing and home economic skills. In fact daughter Susan made most of her own clothes while being mentored by Helen. She had a lot of fun helping them present their 4-H projects at the Sandusky County Fair in Fremont, OH. The family was also members of the Fremont Episcopal Church. Helen assumed various roles as Sunday school teacher, teacher coordinator, and member of the Episcopal Women's Guild. During this period of time, Helen was employed as a bank teller and later as bank officer with the Lindsey Branch of Bank One of Ohio. For hobbies Helen was never at a loss. She enjoyed making clothes and costumes for herself and family and later her grandkids. Helen also made square dance costumes for she and Nick for participation in a local club. At dances the two of them performed many wonderful steps, but Dad's favorite was the jitterbug, and Helen never missed a beat. She and the family spent endless happy hours gardening and harvesting fruits and vegetables, and then canning or freezing them for winter use. Her spiced peaches at Thanksgiving were heavenly. The family enjoyed many vacations to Nick's Italian family in Long Island, New York, as well as her own family in western Kansas and Illinois. Lake Erie beaches were a wonderful escape for swimming and picnicking on a Sunday afternoon. Probably the most significant activity Helen and Nick shared was jogging daily in Lindsey no matter the weather. Later they also meditated together after taking a Transcendental Meditation course. Dad always said he enjoyed the snooze. In 1989 Helen and Nick retired to Raymore, MO, to be closer to their grandkids in Leawood, KS. While living in the K.C. area, a hallmark of our family was the creation and consumption of delicious family dinners rich in both healthy food and fun and engaging conversation. Helen and Nick were also members of Christ Church of Overland Park, KS, and later Helen attended St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Belton. Helen also enjoyed volunteering with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. Helen had great faith in God and country, and would often reminisce about growing up in the Dust Bowl and entering adulthood at the start of WW II. Helen was a tireless supporter of her family, and was a constant resource to share confidences with. She was objective in her thinking and faultlessly nonjudgmental. Helen was a true and faithful friend to all who knew her. Helen's kindnesses and thoughtful nature were boundless. She is truly missed. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nicholas P. Sarle and brother, Jay Bayha. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Hetrick (Ron), son, Michael Sarle (Karen); brother, Arthur Bayha (Marie), sister, Virginia Ireland (Gerald); three grandchildren, Brooke Seiz (Paul), Rudd Hetrick (Gina), Todd Hetrick; two great grandchildren, Orion Seiz and Jonas Hetrick.
