HAROLD LESLIE DAY
Harold Leslie Day, 76, of Raymore, Missouri passed from his life on July 10, 2011. Funeral services will be 11 AM Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore, Missouri with visitation 10-11 AM. Graveside services will be 3 PM Wednesday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri. Harold was born September 23, 1934 in Raytown, Missouri, the son of Elijah and Beulah Wagner Day. He graduated from Raytown High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952. After two years of service as a cook on a tanker, he returned home and began his career as an ironworker and welder. On August 20, 1954, he married Mary Ann Abbas. After a short while, he and Mary Ann moved the family to Raymore and Harold became actively involved in the community. He refereed football games and umpired baseball games while the children were in school. He was instrumental in starting a volunteer fire department for the small town and served as a Fire Commissioner for 20 years. He also served on the Community Betterment Association and helped the town to establish a city park. His welding skills were useful in building the baseball backstop. He also served the city as a municipal judge. Harold belonged to the Raymore Historical Society, the Ararat Shrine, Knights Templar, Grand Lodge of Masons, VFW and the Ironworkers Local Union No. 10. He was always ready to help his fellow man – he never knew a stranger. Harold was a life-time member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – now known as the Community of Christ. He was a faithful believer. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Beulah (Wagner) Day; his brother, John Day of Walton, Indiana; and his sister, Margaret Hughes of Lowry City, Missouri. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann of 56 years; son, Harold Jr. (Hal) of Lomita, California; daughters, Joan Barnett of Blue Springs, Missouri and Janice (Wayne) Bowers of Lamoni, Iowa; sisters, Ellen Perdee of Adrian, Missouri and Betty (Jerry) Loveland of Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Kristina (Chip) Millslagle, Cassidy Barnett, Chelsey Day, and Elijah Day; four great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.
