GEORGE L. YOCUM
George L. Yocum, age 82, of Raymore, Missouri, went to be with his LORD and Savior on August 19, 2017, at St. Luke's Hospice House, surrounded by the love of his family. Cremation with Inurnment took place at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Missouri. Memorial Contributions may be given to St. Luke's Hospice House, 3516 Summit St, Kansas City, MO. 64111; or to Les Feldick Ministries, 30706 W. Lona Valley Road, Kinta, OK. 74552.
George was born on August 7, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the son of Leo G. and Mildred S. Yocum. He attended SEHS and graduated from SWHS in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1952, George joined the United States Marines and served his country during the Korean War. He received his Bachelor's degree from Emporia State in Secondary Education and then went on to receive his Master's degree in History from the University of Missouri. He was working on his Ph.D. at UMKC until he became ill and retired in 1990.
On August 27, 1956, George was united in marriage with Helen M. McClure of Bethesda, MD. Together, George and Helen were blessed with four children, George, Laura, Kathleen and Cynthia.
George lovingly supported his family as a teacher at Ruskin High School in Kansas City, Missouri until his retirement. For five years, George worked as a librarian for the Mid-Continent Public Library. He also worked as a railroad switchman and at Armco Steel in the years after the Marine Corps.
George was a member of the First Baptist Church of Raymore. He faithfully served his LORD as a Sunday school teacher at the church. Also he was an avid reader and enjoyed many hobbies; historical research, hunting, fishing, model railroading, building models, and music (Roy Acuff forever!).
George is survived by his cherished wife of 61 years, Helen M. Yocum; his children, George L. Yocum, Jr. (Kathy Jo), Laura Lynn Tewes (Robert), Kathleen M. Pyles (Richard), and Cynthia Ch?rie Schmidt (Thomas); nine grandchildren, Jeremy, James (Maclair), Jessica (James), Emily, Travis (Hiromi), Christopher (Deborah), Tiffany (Jimmy), David (Becca), and Barrett; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Shane, Natalie, Anna, Alyssa, Kash and Jayma.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10:30-11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 29, at the First Baptist Church of Raymore, 116 S. Washington, Raymore, MO. 64083. Fellowship will be held at the church after the service.
