FRED G. EPPERSON
Freddie "Fred" G. Epperson, age 89, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away June 9, 2017. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Funeral begins at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Hickman Mills Community Christian Church. Burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.
Fred was born September 24, 1927 in Heber Springs, Arkansas. He was the son of Mayburn and Esther (Haile) Epperson. At age three, Fred and his parents moved to Butler where he grew up and graduated in the class of 1947. Fred was very active in basketball and football and was deemed the captain of the football team. In track he broke the record and received a trophy which still remains in the showcase of the school.
After high school, Fred attended Fort Scott Community College for two years until he was drafted to serve in the United States Army. He bravely served his country during the Korean War and became Master Sergeant. After his service ended, he returned to his home in Butler and began his career as a salesman for Butternut Bread Company.
On July 17, 1954 Fred married the love of his life, Joan Gwin, and together they were blessed with four children, Marsha, Galen, Mark and Jim. Fred lovingly supported his family as a salesman for Butternut, Tasty and finally Colonial Bread where he would eventually retire after 40 years of dedicated service.
Fred was a follower of Jesus Christ and was very involved in the Hickman Mills Community Christian Church where he was a member, an elder, and served on the board. He was a Teamster (local #58). He also gave his time and support to Habitat for Humanity. Fred enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, fishing, hunting and wood working.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mayburn and Esther Epperson. He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 63 years, Joan Epperson; his children, Marsha Hamilton (Rusty), Galen Epperson (Darci), Mark Epperson, and Jim Epperson; sisters, Billie Dines and Mary Mae Lewis (Bob); seven grandchildren, Jordan Quayle (Nicole), Kelly Feitz (Ricky), Katie Quayle, Josh Quayle (Melissa), Jeff Epperson (Tatum), Jacob Epperson, and Mattie McDonald (Caleb); and fifteen great-grandchildren.
