"¿Cómo podemos resumir la vida de una persona que significa tanto para tantas personas? Solo podemos intentar describir los actos de amor que permanecen en nuestros corazones. Elvira Girón nació el 26 de junio de 1946 en el pequeño pueblo de Oratorio de Concepción, El Salvador. Fue la primera hija de María Sara y Manuel Meléndez. Aunque la familia era pobre, los Meléndez eran ricos en amor. Este amor fue transmitido a Elvira, quien se mantuvo dedicada a su familia: su padre, su madre, su hermano, Porfirio, y sus abuelos. Cuando su madre estaba muriendo, Elvira le prometió que siempre cuidaría de su padre.

Cuando tenía catorce años, tomó su primer trabajo en una farmacia. Muy pronto, sus habilidades organizativas y su arduo trabajo se ganaron el respeto y la confianza de los dueños, y ascendió hasta administrar la farmacia. Este trabajo cambió su vida el día que estaba subiendo por una escalera para colocar suministros en un estante y Justo Pastor Girón entró en la tienda sugiriendo que podía ayudar. Desde ese momento, Pastor buscó a Elvira y se convirtió en el amor de su vida. Se casaron y se establecieron en el pueblo de Mejicanos, El Salvador, y comenzaron el siguiente capítulo de su vida dedicada a sus hijos: Santos, Manuel, Sara e Isaura. A finales de los 70, Pastor y Elvira tenían el sueño de tener un restaurante, así que construyeron su casa en Lourdes, Colon, con la idea de tener un negocio para tener una mejor vida.

Cuando estalló una guerra civil en El Salvador a finales del 79, los Girón se dieron cuenta de que la mejor vida estaba en Estados Unidos. Pastor viajó en julio de 1980 para ganar suficiente dinero para llevar a su familia. El 28 de octubre de 1980, Elvira viajó con sus cuatro hijos, su padre y una amiga de la familia. Elvira llevó a su familia a través de la frontera, hacia la promesa de América y la reunificación con Pastor. Cumplió su promesa a su madre y cuidó de su padre por el resto de su vida.

Finalmente, la familia se estableció en Des Moines, Iowa. Elvira permaneció dedicada a su familia y a Dios. Es la mujer más fuerte que conocemos y trabajó duro para ofrecer un futuro mejor a sus hijos. Era una "mil usos": madre, esposa, soldadora, costurera, cocinera/chef, supervisora y más. Pero lo que más alegría le proporcionó fue servir al Señor. Fue una fiel servidora católica de la Iglesia de St. Sabina y Nuestra Señora de la Presentación. Su fe y su amor por el Señor se destacaron ante todos. Su lenguaje de amor eran los actos de servicio y, vaya, todos lo sabían. Proveía comida a cualquiera que lo necesitara. Sus pupusas eran legendarias. Estaba lista para darte su último billete de dólar si eso significaba que no te faltaría nada. A pesar de que tenía cuatro hijos, 15 nietos y numerosos bisnietos, su reserva de amor nunca se agotó. Sus palabras te hacían sentir como si fueras su único favorito y sus manos suaves y cálidas podían curar cualquier herida. Elvira fue muchas cosas para muchas personas, pero para sus hijos, ella era simplemente, "Mamá". Le sobreviven sus cuatro hijos: Santos Girón y su esposa, Mary Ann, los cuatro hijos de Santos, Amber, Adelina, Santos Jr. y Leticia; Manuel Girón y su esposa, Delmira, y sus dos hijas, Gabriela y Stephanie e hija de Manuel, Isaura; Sara Gardner y su esposo, Chad, y sus dos hijos, Isabela y el pequeño Chad; Isaura Broste y su esposo, Brian, y sus dos hijos, Sabrina y Luke, y, los hijos de su hermano, Alex y Álvaro Meléndez. Aunque la extrañaremos, encontramos consuelo en su fortaleza y fe en Dios."

How can we sum up the life of a person who means so much to so many people? We can only try to describe the acts of love that remain in our hearts. Elvira Giron was born June 26, 1946 in the small town of Oratorio De Concepcion, El Salvador. She was the first-born child of Maria Sara and Manuel Melendez. Though the family was poor, the Melendez's were rich in love. This love was passed to Elvira, and she remained dedicated to her family: her father, mother, her brother, Porfirio, and her grandparents. When her mother was dying, Elvira promised her she would always take care of her father.

When she was fourteen, she took her first job working in a pharmacy. Very quickly, her organization skills and hard work won the respect and trust of the owners and she rose to manage the pharmacy. This job changed her life the day she was climbing up a ladder to place supplies on a shelf and Justo Pastor Giron wandered into the store suggesting he help. From that moment, Pastor pursued Elvira, and he became the love of her life. They were married and settled into the town of Mejicanos, El Salvador, and started the next chapter of her life's dedication: her children Santos, Manuel, Sara, and Isaura. In the late 70's, Justo and Elvira had a dream of owning a restaurant, so they built their home in Lourdes, Colon, with the idea of running a business to have a better life.

When a civil war broke out in El Salvador in late '79, the Girons realized the better life was in the United States. Pastor traveled in July 1980 to earn enough money to bring his family. On October 28, 1980, Elvira traveled with her four children, her father and a family friend. Elvira led her family across the border, to the promise of America and reunification with Justo. She kept her promise to her mother and took care of her father for the rest of his life.

Eventually, the family settled in Des Moines, Iowa. Elvira remained dedicated to her family and God. She is the strongest woman we know and worked hard to provide a better future for her children. She was a jack of many trades: mother, wife, welder, seamstress, cook/chef, supervisor, and more. But the one that brought her the most joy was to serve the Lord. She was a faithful Catholic servant of St. Sabina and Our Lady of Presentation Church. Her faith and her love for the Lord stood out to everyone. Her love language was acts of service and boy, did everyone know it. She provided food to any and all who needed it. Her pupusas were legendary. She was quick to hand you her last dollar bill if it meant you would not go without. Even though she had four kids, 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; her reserve of love never ran dry. Her words made you feel like you were her one and only favorite and her soft and warm hands could heal any hurt. Elvira was many things to many people, but to her babies she was simply, "Mamá". She is survived by her four children, Santos Giron and his wife, Mary Ann, Santos' four children, Amber, Adelina, Santos, Jr. and Leticia; Manuel Giron and his wife, Delmira and their two daughters, Gabriela and Stephanie and Manuel's daughter, Isaura; Sara Gardner and her husband, Chad, and their two children, Isabela and little Chad; Isaura Broste and her husband, Brian, their two children, Sabrina and Luke, and, her brother's sons in  El Salvador, Alex and Álvaro Meléndez.  Though we will miss her, we find comfort in her strength and faith in God.
