DR. NORMAN GENE McCARTHY
Dr. Norman Gene McCarthy, 84, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. “Doc,” as he was known to his friends, was born on September 28, 1941, the eldest of three children and only son of Norman and Mabel McCarthy. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army, he graduated from medical school in 1976, specializing in ophthalmology, and practiced medicine in and around Kansas City for over 40 years.
Despite living in the city and working in clinical settings, Norm was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed canoeing, camping, and hunting; in his later years, when health prevented him from pursuing these activities, he spent his time preparing skeletons of Missouri wildlife, which he would often present as gifts to family and friends. A long-time member of the Boy Scouts of America, he served on the Foundation Board of Troop 62 and spent many summers as staff physician at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation.
He will be remembered by many for his loquacity. He could liven up any room, in any company, for any duration, with loud, witty conversation, and was never shy about sharing his opinions. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Bonnie A. Mikel; and his beloved dog, Duke. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patricia “Patsy” McCarthy (née Fugitt); their two children, Erik McCarthy (Katy) and Shayna Keary (David); and three grandsons: Cotton, Wren, and Mica McCarthy.
A visitation will be held from 10-11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Cullen Funeral Home, Inc., 612 W. Foxwood Dr., Raymore, Missouri 64083 followed by the burial at 11:00 a.m. at the Raymore Cemetery, Raymore, Missouri.
