DOROTHY M. FURLONG

Dorothy M. Furlong, age 80, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Saint Luke's East Hospital in Lee's Summit, MO. She was a resident of Raymore, MO at the time of passing.

Dorothy was born May 8, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York. She was the daughter of Eugene C. and Dorothy I. (Parks) MacDermott.

A compassionate soul who worked for social reform and environmental causes, Dorothy earned her Bachelor's degree in Political Science at Binghamton University in New York. She started her career at Wayne State University in Detroit, working with both the registration office and Hillel Student Organization. She then became a school administrator at The Friends School in Detroit, where she supported Quaker beliefs such as pacifism for 15 years.

Dorothy immersed herself and her children in culture and the arts. She was an enthusiastic and thoughtful reader, enjoyed public radio and television, and as a young woman she played the flute, which she took up again in her retirement. Dorothy was also a tennis player and life-long fan of the sport.

Dorothy was a woman of gentle conviction, a dedicated mother, and generous spirit. She was loved fiercely and completely by those who knew her well. She is deeply missed.

Services are pending at a later date. Inurnment will take place in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to the League of Women Voters http://www.lwv.org.

Dorothy is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Malcolm MacDermott. She is survived by her brother, Eugene MacDermott (Anne); her two children, Patrick T. Furlong (Dora) and Carolyn J. Ng (Vincent); and granddaughter, Elena Ng.
