Obituary

DAVID STERLING CATTLE, SR.

David Sterling Cattle, Sr. of Belton, MO passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Carnegie Village, age 87. Born October 26, 1930 in Hannibal, MO, David was the son of Edgar H. and Birdie (Rice) Cattle. He married Barbara Ann Hesler on August 19, 1956 in Lexington, MO.

David graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor's degree in Education, a Master's degree in Administration, and an Educational Specialist degree. He served two years in the Army during the Korean War stationed in Okinawa.

His career began teaching Math at Wellington High School where he met his future bride, Barbara. He then moved to Kansas City to teach Math at Center High School. Next, he took on his first administrator role in Granite City, IL. The family's next move was to Higginsville, MO where he was the first principal of the new high school. Returning back to Kansas City in 1968, he impacted many lives with his always fair, patient and understanding ways as Vice Principal and Principal of Ruskin High School. He was admired and also known for his practical jokes and positive outlook for all students and faculty friends over the years.

He retired with 30 plus years devoted to education. In retirement, he divided his time by teaching at Our Lady of Peace Catholic grade school, volunteering at Coronation of Our Lady food pantry, gardening and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren passing on his gentle kindness and fun-loving humor with countless stories, games and much laughter. He was a talented writer of poems using clever rhymes which brought a smile to many reading his doctored Christmas and birthday cards. Of his many favorite sayings, he lived by the words of Grantland Rice, "And when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name—He writes - not that you won or lost - but how you played the Game."

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws Mary Lillian and Lawrence Hesler; sister Virginia Rice Slee and husband Jack; brother-in-law Robert Friebus; sister-in-law Carolyn Collins and niece Celia Weber.

Survivors include his wife Barbara; brother Don Cattle (Kay) of Azle, TX; sister Susan Cattle of Fish Creek, WI; sisters-in-law Marilyn Mautino (Louis) of Lexington, MO; Joan Bardach; Mag Updyke (Clarence); Debbie Friebus all of Tucson, AZ. He has three daughters, Cathy Maple (Rob) of Kansas City, MO; Kim Miles (Ed) of Olathe, KS; Julie Smith (Mark) of Grandview, MO; and one son, David S. Cattle, Jr. (Huei-Li) of Houston, TX.
