CHARLOTTE BERNDT
Charlotte Berndt (née Voight) passed into eternal rest on April 8, 2025 surrounded by her loving family and fortified by the sacraments of Holy Mother Church.
Charlotte was born to Henry and Frances Voight on April 30, 1943 on a small farm near Ripon, Wisconsin. She graduated from Ripon High School in 1961 and went on to attend Mount Sinai College of Nursing in Milwaukee, graduating in 1964.
Charlotte met the man of her dreams in the first grade, standing next to Kenneth Berndt in their class photo. The couple wed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Ripon on June 6, 1964 and enjoyed nearly 61 years together. They had three daughters, each of whom followed Charlotte into nursing.
Charlotte moved with her young family to Kansas City, Kansas in 1972. She worked at Bethany Medical Center and Westglen Endoscopy for nearly 20 years, until Ken's engineering firm transferred the couple to Chicago from 1989 to 1998.
While in Illinois, Charlotte continued to specialize in GI nursing at Hinsdale Hospital. She also went back to school to become a licensed massage therapist.
Returning to Kansas City in 1998, Charlotte resumed her nursing career at Westglen Endoscopy and St. Luke's South. She retired in 2007.
In retirement, Charlotte enjoyed playing golf, bunco, canasta,and other card games. She also loved volunteer in nursing homes and hopsice care centers, using massage therapy to comfort the elderly and the dying. Charlotte also enjoyed serving with Meals on Wheels and REACH, a ministry for the developmentally disabled.
The Catholic faith was incredibly important to Charlotte. She was an active member of Ascension Catholic Church in Overland Park, Kansas for many years.
As a farm girl, Charlotte never shied away from hard work or serving others. She never met a stranger, she saw Jesus in everyone, and she never forgot where she came from.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Frances Voight, her parents-in-law Lawrence and Katherine Berndt, her sister and brother-in-law Lorraine and Karl Hielsberg, her sister-in-law Mary Heidel, and a grandson, George Lawrence.
She is survived by her husband Ken, her daughters Lisa Macy (Jim), Michelle Sexton (Terry), and Jill Berndt-Romero, as well as four granddaughters and one great grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Charlotte on Wednesday, April 16at Ascension Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa.
