BETTE LON MECHLIN JOHNSON

After a courageous and long battle with cancer, Bette Lon Mechlin Johnson passed on July 9, 2018, in Lee's Summit, MO. She was the wife of Earnest Haskell Johnson. They shared 25 happy years of marriage. Bette and Ernie are the parents of Kelli (Tad) Snell of Harrisonville, MO and Michael (Jennifer) Newbold of Lee's Summit, MO.

Born in Mexico, MO, on April 29, 1943, to Charles Donald and Mildred Wilson Mechlin. She attended and graduated from Centralia High School. After graduation, she attended college in Kirksville. The next step in her journey included spending many years raising a family in Atlantic, Iowa, where she enjoyed her involvement in the community including her work with the performing arts through the Arts Council. Other organizations she was involved in included PEO and MAESP among others. She was a graduate of Buena Vista College and later went on to complete graduate degrees through the University of MO Columbia. Bette was passionate about education and spent numerous years in Iowa and Missouri teaching and sixteen years as an elementary school principal in both Lone Jack and Belton, Mo. While at Hillcrest Elementary, Bette was nominated for National Distinguished Principal Award.

Bette enjoyed spending time with her family, garage sales, and life on their farm. She will be remembered for her beautiful, warm smile and devotion to family and friends.

Bette is survived by her husband, Ernie of the home, her children, Kelli (Tad) Snell, Michael (Jennifer) Newbold, her grandchildren, Tucker Quinn, Abby Quinn, Nicholas Newbold, Lauren Newbold, Amber Snell and Paige Vaught, her sister, Sue (Tom) Sims, sister-in-law, Becky Mechlin, brother-in-law, Don Newbold, 4 nieces, 2 nephews, 2 great-grandchildren and many dear friends and colleagues. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jon Mechlin.

The memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15 at Harrisonville United Methodist Church (2600 E. Mechanic Street, Harrisonville, MO 64701). Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation in the name of Bette Lon Johnson to Operation School Bell, c/o Assistance League of Kansas City, 6101 North Chestnut, Gladstone, Missouri 64119.
