Obituary

Bernard Udell Dooley passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of May 30, 2025, surrounded by his beloved wife of nearly 63 years and their two daughters. He is preceded in death by his mother, Mable Dooley, his father, Dell Dooley, and his brother Bill Dooley.

Udell is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Alice Dooley; his daughters, Kim Gates (Ron) and Kelly Owens (Dan); his brother, Pat Dooley (Marie); four grandchildren—Kori Gates, Jessica Gates (Brett Slaterbeck), Cody Gates (Amanda), and Kara Owens; and one great-grandchild, Sloane Gates.

Born on September 24, 1943, in Koshkonong, Missouri, Udell later moved to Longview Farms before settling in Raymore, Missouri, where he spent most of his life and built a home with Mary Alice.

A hardworking man with a deep sense of duty, Udell held many jobs throughout his life—from hauling hay and tires to digging holes for septic installations. In 1977, he started his own business, Dooley Backhoe, building a reputation for dependable and honest work throughout the community.

His dedication and meticulous approach to septic system installation even earned him a feature on the cover of Onsite Installer magazine, in an article fittingly titled "A Particular Man." The piece highlighted his hands-on approach, his commitment to doing things right, and his role in pioneering low-pressure distribution systems in Missouri.

He was a devoted father and grandfather who found joy in every moment spent with family. Known for his sense of humor and unmistakable voice, he could always steer a conversation toward his favorite topic: septic tanks.

He especially loved cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events and treasured any occasion that brought the whole family together. Udell, a man of strong faith, always said a heartfelt prayer before meals: "Bless our children and our grandchildren."

Udell's vibrant personality, infectious laugh, and life lived with love and purpose made a lasting impression on everyone he met. From the sound of his shuffling feet to the ever-present chewing of gum, his presence will be deeply missed.

He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, honesty, kindness, and unwavering love. Though he is no longer with us, the memories and lessons he shared will be cherished forever.

A private family burial will take place at Raymore Cemetery. A celebration of Udell's life will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 1101 E. Gore Rd. Raymore, Missouri 64083.
